Adapting your marketing for SMS vs Email

However SMS unlike email has ongoing cost everytime you send a message, the higher the volume the higher the cost. It’s a very expensive channel coz you are paying per message. SMS gateways usually require require numbers in international format (e.g. +61437194480), however most of your data will be in local format (e.g. 0437194480). You’ll need to manually clean data.

Why Marketo doesn't support 2-Way SMS?  

Only One-way SMS is supported out-of-the-box in Marketo using Webhooks. A webhooks is a simple way for Marketo to connect to an external system, in this case your SMS Gateway. It has limitations making Marketo unable to support 2-Way SMS.

Top Limitations of the Inbuilt Marketo 1-Way SMS  

Event he default 1-Way SMS in Marketo has major limitations and could pose many problems in effectively implementing marketing campaigns.

UNABLE TO MANAGE SUBSCRIBES AND
UNSUBSCRIBES IN MARKET0

It will require a lot of manual work which increases the risk of spamming the wrong numbers. Sending SMS to people who are unsubscribed would be very much expensive due to getting fined.

The consumer can’t control subscription. You can’t have a customer go back into your subscription centre and opt back in the SMS or different SMS programs. 

ADMIN ACCESS IS REQUIRED TO PUT TOKENS IN THE MESSAGES 

So an average Marketo user is unable to even customize a 1-Way SMS program with, as simple as, a name (i.e, “Hi Joe”) since admin access to Webhooks is also needed. Thus, complexity is being compromised. Basically it is not suitable for a generic Marketo user. 

How can I do 1-Way SMS with Marketo?  

First, You have to go to Webhook since this is the one the integrates with the gateway. Second, you set the outbound field to whatever message you type it. You can use token if you want. Third, you request a campaign called “Send SMS”

Can Marketo handle high-volume SMS?  

One of the fundamental limitations of Marketo is Webhooks. It has reach limitations of a 140 outbound calls per second. So if you’re doing like 10,000 SMS in a span of few minutes that would probably be more than 140 per second. This means if you’re trying to do such volume, Webhooks will start skipping and some messages will not go out or be sent. Thus, Marketo is unable to do high volume SMS sent.

Why Marketo 1-way SMS doesn’t scale  

Marketo is unable to run multiple SMS programs simultaneously on the same number or even on multiple numbers. Thus, there’s no way to keep track of which program inbound messages are linked to. Also, you can’t even clone programs easily which requires manual work and some phone errors.

With Marketo 1-Way SMS, you are unable to use multiple inbound numbers for different regions or initiatives and neither uses the same inbound number for multiple programs which requires you to look for a new solution that is not cost effective. Also, you can’t use multiple SMS gateways which mean you can’t get the gateway with the best deliverability dropping your ROI.
